A city life ...

As some people know, i have moved from one small city to another big city. In the small city i used to be an hitech engineer for a large organization, travelling 22 km daily. In the big city i am a consultant for a small organization, travelling for 22 min daily. Both distances are one - way.

What makes me wonder is in both places, i get frustrated during the journey. Vehicles are everywhere, too much of smoke, everyone keeps honking, no one cares for the rules, the list goes on and on... but by the time u reach ur office or home, u will be completely drained.

What i fail to understand is, why do we have to put up with all that, the kind of work what i was doing before and now, are different but they have one thing in common. Given the telecommunication network we have, 80% of the work can be done from any location. If thats the case, why do we have to put up with all this. Why cant we work in a place where we have some peace, where the mere thought of going to the office or home, doesnt make the hair raise, where the decibel and pollution levels are low.

For my current job, i have to travel a bit, when i have to meet up with clients but in a IT setting u dont have to do that. I am not suggesting u sit at home and work, but we can leave the hustle and bustle of the city and move to quite and peaceful sub urbs and work from there. Since majority of the people working in these kind of companies migrate from different places, relocation should not be a problem as long as basic amenities are present. This way there will be less irritation and frustration among the employees. What a nice thing to happen to all of us.

Why cant the people who take a call on the location see what most of us see.

Things are not that simple.

Everyone wants to be in a place with a lot of amenities. (Irrespective of how frequently one uses them).
I personally would like to be in a place which has a thousand dissimilar diversions for entertainment and relaxation.

Moreover bigger congregating at the cities mean that one bumps into more and diverse type of people everyday.

Moreover one need not travel far to meet one's friends. And one has more friends in such bigger congregations.

Despite having given all the arguments, I admit that I personally hate wasting time on commuting to work - afterall it does not add any value at all. If I want to travel, I would like to do so at my own convenience, at my preferred timing, and not forcefully before and after office-hours everyday.

The solution (for those who can afford) is to stay very close to office in a big city full of energy and varied diversions - a win-win situation (neglect the pollution).

You might use my argument against me - if one wants to enjoy amenities, meet friends, etc - let one do it at their own convenience by travelling to 'active' places if and when they want to.

Well there are two theories against it : (i) weekdays will definitely be boring and the element of surprise present in big agglomerations will be missing
(ii) lethargy will take over and inspiring oneself to go out to happening places will be difficult.

I was visiting different offices of a public sector company a few days back. The staff preferred getting transferred to the bigger towns and cities despite the lack of any monetary or any other direct incentive.
The result - bloated offices in cities, and sweepers doing the task of officers in non-urban towns.
